Research

Families and friends are shattered by the way a challenging illness affects their loved ones and every day people continue to die. Diagnosis and treatments are improving all the time. But whilst this disease kills, we must continue our part in researching for a cure.

Through the extraordinary efforts and the faith of the community, the Institute is in a critical stage of development. With excellent facilities, expert and skilled research team, and a tissue bank of over 35,000 samples, we are focused on patient orientated research. A unifying theme of the program, is based on how the immune system can be redirected to attack cancer cells.

The Institute is in a unique position to study human sequential samples from patients. The group are working to identify new proteins on the cell surface that enable cancer cells to escape immune detection, by creating a camouflaging “fog” around these cells. In doing so, leading to new treatment development of druggable antibody targets to “lift the fog” from these cells.

Key projects include Immunology, Breast cancer, Bowel cancer, Brain cancer, Ovarian cancer, Renal Cancer, Chronic lymphocytic leukaemia, Multiple Myeloma, Prostate cancer, and Langerhans cell histiocytosis. The Institute currently has 2 PhD staff.

As Australia’s only regional research institute, we are an example that innovative research can be done outside of a metropolitan centre. The group’s research findings have been published, with over 63 peer-reviewed publications accepted in the last 5 years in high profile journals, 10 in the last 12 months. The publication of our research cements the relevancy and importance of our work, as we look toward new treatments and outcomes for patients.

Producing Results

Our program has been highly productive over the last year, with 10 projects publishing results in international journals. The publication of our research cements the relevancy and importance of our work.
