JANET  JONES OAM

1963 – 2021

Janet’s indomitable spirit and zest for life was a hallmark of her life.
She was inspired to create the Lighthouse Classic in 2021 to shed new light on what causes cancer and how it can be treated more effectively.
Janet herself faced three separate battles with cancer over more than 33 years and was passionate about research that might help others facing similar challenges.
She first began supporting the Fiona Elsey Cancer Research Institute in the early 1990s when it was known as the Cancer in Kids Auxiliary.
As well as her work supporting cancer research, Janet was also committed to community service in a range of other ways.
This included co-founding the Starfish Nippers program to provide kids and young adults with disabilities an opportunity to learn water skills and beach safety. This program now operates in life saving clubs across Australia and overseas.
In recognition of Janet’s community work, she received an Order of Australia Medal in the Queen’s Birthday Honours in 2021.
In January 2023, The Lighthouse Classic will again take place in memory of Janet, to raise more research funds and as a tribute to others touched by cancer.
